Brno, Sep 25 (BD) – Brno Fire Rescue Service Department tested a transit of rescue equipment on Brno streets last week.
Their exercise pointed out a major long-lasting problem in Brno – the fire trucks are often blocked by badly parked cars. The most problematic areas are residential neighborhoods, such as Vinohrady.
“The cars are away in the morning, but during the afternoon and night they are parked again and that’s a great inconvenience,” Jaromír Mikoška, spokesman of South Moravian firefighters, reported.
The blocked firefighting route can be addressed in several ways. Calling the owner of the car takes time and the firefighters have to reach the fire or other emergency situation as fast as possible.
“If we’re in hurry, we can swing the cars and move them, or we have to stretch hose lines over long distances, which is obviously time consuming”, Mikoška explained.
Sometimes, firefighters must go directly to the burning area and use a ladder. In such cases, the fire truck must search for alternative path for access and loses precious time.
The capacity of parking places in the residential areas is insufficient and drivers often don’t keep safe distances.
Drivers should keep at least 3 meters gap for the smooth drive of firemen’s vehicles. Do not park in turns and narrow streets, fire firefighters advise. The consideration of drivers multiplies the speed of firefighters’ intervention and thus increases the chance of saving people’s lives and property, South Moravian firefighters reminded.
