HC Kometa Settle In for 8 of 10 January Home Games

HC Kometa has won the Tipsport extraliga title in each of the last two seasons. Both times they started the seasons strong, cratered in the middle, rebounded late in the regular season and then caught fire in the postseason.

This year, if they are to follow the same pattern to a third consecutive title, they have the perfect opportunity to set themselves up for the postseason with eight of the next 10 games this January in the friendly confides of DRFG Arena.

The homestand starts with two big games this week. League-leading Oceláři Třinec (60 points) visits at 6 p.m. on Friday and then third-place Mountfield HK (55) comes on Sunday at 6:20 p.m.

HC Kometa (50), which won three of four games during the two holiday weeks, is currently fifth in the league. Most recently, they went to Pardubice and scored three third-period goals to win, 1-4.

American Peter Mueller has 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points. Martin Zaťovič has 14 and 12 for 26 points.

Petr Holík leads the team with 34 points. He had a hat trick at Olomouc on Boxing Day and two goals at Pardubice to double his previous total to 10 goals. Most of his points have come from the astounding 24 assists he has racked up.

Next week, there are three more games on home ice: Tuesday (Olomouc at 6 p.m.), Friday (Karlovy Vary, 6 p.m.) and Sunday (Litvínov, 5 p.m.)

The regular season ends on March 8.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Brno Beats Prague for Second Win in Three Games

Brno broke a nine-game league losing streak when it travelled to Ostrava and won, 75-81, on Dec. 15.

Then, after losing at BK Armex Děčín, 69-63, they got back into the swing of things with an 87-69 home victory over USK Praha on Dec. 29.

The two wins were led by Davell Roby. He scored 13 of Brno’s final 15 points during the final six minutes of the game at Ostrava and ended with 22. Against Prague, he scored 24 points.

“(USK Praha) was a very important game for us and it was a special game for me because this was my ex-team,” said Brno head coach Christianos Chougkaz, who coached USK Praha to a 19-19 record last year. “I am very happy because I can see my team play better and better defense. I try to motivate and explain to them that it is not basketball without defense. I see that they put more energy into it. I am also happy to see more players in the rotation who help our team.”

Current USK Praha coach Dino Repeša was also impressed: “We can see that (Chougkaz) has brought new freshness to the team. They are now a team that we will compete with for the top eight.”

egoé Basket Brno goes to BK JIP Pardubice on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Their next home game is on Thursday, Jan. 10 when they host BK Opava at 8 p.m.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
