MEN’S FOOTBALL

Zbrojovka Lineup Changes Lead to Home Victory

Head coach Pavel Šustr mixed up his lineup against FC Vítkovice and FC Zbrojovka was rewarded with its first home victory of the 2019-20 Fortune:Narodni Liga season.

Several players were swapped out for this game, which started on Friday night with no power in the stadium and had an extended halftime before the lights came on. Petr Pavlík, who came back from a long absence, scored the only goal of the game just before halftime. David Krška, who arrived after the season had started, put a long free kick across the mouth of the goal to find Petr Pavlík, who headed the ball into the goal for the 1-0 winner.

Additional changes were Adam Fousek (a recent addition) and Peter Štepanovský (back from an injury) replaced Robert Bartolomeu and Šimon Šumbera. Team-captain Lukas Magera also sat on the bench to allow Jan Pázler, a new striker, to get the start.

Zbrojovka (2-3-1, nine points) will try to build on its home win when it hits the road twice this week. Tonight, they play a MOL Cup game at FC Odra Petřkovice. Kick off is at 5 p.m. On Saturday, they travel to FK Fotbal Třinec for a 10:15 a.m. kick off.

It will be interesting to see the team that Šustr will put on the field.

After this weekend, there will be a break for international play and two weeks of preparation for the first cross-town rivalry game between host FC Zbrojovka and SK Líšeň. The Battle for Brno has been moved to Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.

Líšeň Loses at Jihlava

SK Líšeň suffered its first loss of the season last Friday when it lost at FC Vysočina Jihlava, 3-2.

Perfectly in character for its upstart first season in the league, Líšeň (2-3-1, nine points) scored twice in the second half — Tomas Machalek at 73 minutes and Marek Vintr at 87 minutes — to tie the game and seemingly continue their unbeaten streak. However, Jihlava scored in the 89th minute to win the game and move into second place in the league.

SK Líšeň plays at SK Tatran Ždírec nad Doubravou today at 5 p.m. in the second round of the MOL Cup. This Saturday, SK Líšeň hosts FK Viktoria Žižkov at 5 p.m. Žižkov (4-0-2, 12) is third in the league.

Extra stands and facilities have been added to handle the large crowds that come for every home game.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, cricket, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to bruno@brnodaily.cz.
